The city of Peniche was built on a rocky peninsula and is known for its long consistently windy beaches. It is one of the best surfing locations in Europe and has breaks facing in 3 distinctly different directions making it a very variable and consistent destination for surfers.
The best spot is callled "Supertubos" and it produces waves forming fast and powerful tubes, considered among the best in Europe. The area has been called the "European Pipeline", after the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii.
Since ancient times Peniche has been an important fishing harbour. Besides fisheries, the economy of the Peniche municipality relies on agriculture, services and tourism.
