On the August 17th, 2016, Joe Buck has an intimate conversation with 11-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater on a TV program called The Undeniable Show. They speak about the development of his unique style, the inherent dangers of his sport and, of course, about Olympic Games!
With filming for the interview likely happening before surfing was officially included in the 2020 Tokyo Games, Joe Buck asked Kelly what he thought about the Olympics possibility. And although he previously said he’d compete in the Games, if given the chance, this time he seemed more skeptical. Slater said:
Right now there’s an argument about whether or not surfing should get in the Olympics. We have our World Title. If we get into the Olympics, it might be really great. It could be really cool. But what you’re going to do is you’re going to determine a World Champion, or an Olympian, or the most famous surfer in the world by one event in one type of condition.
Surfing is not really that. If you told me what those conditions were going to be, I could pretty much give you three guys at any given time in those types of conditions that’re going to win. It’s going to be between those three guys. But we have a Title that does it over different types of waves, different geographical places, and over the course of a year. So it’s a long performance that kind of weeds out the best of the best in the end.
